The stocks of the Museum Library comprise approx. 45.000 books and 90 regular journals. They include German and foreign language publications concerning general anthropology and above all specialized literature referring to the regional departments of the museum – Africa, the Americas, Australia and Oceania, Southeast Asia and Europe. Moreover, publications covering non-European modern art, books for children and young people, so called grey literature and sound recording media are continuously being collected and traced. The reading room provides an open-shelf library with regional and specialized bibliographies, journals and reference works.
Older stocks may be opened by an alphabetic card index and by another one indicating the specific location. Since 1997 new entries are formally and factually recorded in an electronic catalogue. In the reading room research opportunities may be broadened by using the OPAC program or the internet connection to the general catalogue of the Frankfurt museum libraries.
The library is accessible to all interested persons after having arranged an appointment by phone (0049-69/212-34349, -45277) or e-mail. It is a reference library which consequently excludes any lending. Users have working spaces in the reading room and the OPAC program for research through literature and internet at their disposal. A copier is available.
The Frankfurt museum libraries have joined to a platform in order to present in the internet a common access to all the catalogues of the affiliated institutions.
